Can I get a grant if I have defaulted from student loans?

May 7th, 2010

I want to go back to school desperately because I cannot find a job.

I went to a community college a few years ago and took out a loan. I then decided school was not for me and moved and started working full time. Well, I cancelled the loan, within the 30 days. I NEVER GOT THIS LOAN (1500).

They claim the loan was given to the school and the school claims that I never faxed them anything!! I don’t have proof that I did either because I was moving around and lost the paperwork. Now I’m in default and was filling out the Fafsa online and at the end it asked if I had defaulted on any loans….so can I still get a grant? I haven’t paid anything on this loan (single mom no child support).

What do I do? I have called the school over the phone but they just say they don’t have a record. HELP!!

My student loan company is giving me the runaround on trying to get a forbearance….?

April 7th, 2010

I talk to two different companies multiple times a week about the same loans. The one is the originator the other is a collection processing place. Its to the point where I don’t even know who I’m calling because they freely pass my calls back and forth.

They sent me forms I mailed them to the one company..they said they never got them. I then faxed them to that company, again they claim not to have gotten them.

I faxed the forms to the originator company and they say they never got the first and now the second they say are old forms and won’t accept. (though I was given them after they apparently stopped using them) This company also won’t give me an address. I have no idea where they are even located and they went out of business.

I am going crazy trying to work with these companies and don’t know what to do. They change their requirements every time I call…..

Is there anything I can do?
And don’t tell me to just pay them, because I would be if my job didn’t cut back my days.
these are private loans

can I get out of 20% penelty for defaulting on student loan?

April 5th, 2010

The day my mother in law died I received a call about deferring my loan. I talked to the person and thought all was set. A year later I get a letter saying my loan is in default. I call nelnet my loan company and they say they sold the loan to college assist. They had my address spelled wrong and I had gotten married so my name changed. I call college assist and they offer me what seems to be a good program. 120$ month for 6 months then it goes back to Nelnet and and I can defer. So I accept over the phone and they take the money out. Now I keep getting calls saying they want me to sign an agreement saying I have to pay them almost 5,000 plus my loan for 22,000. It was in default for less than 2 months plus I didnt get thier letters and they called on a day where I was very upset. Is 20% for 2 months fair? Is there something I can do, like negotiate less? I havent signed anything yet. Thank you SO much for your imput!
